Sophia Wöhleke works with analogue photography in order to explore ideas of place and identity. Exploring the duality of the strange and familiar, her works plays with the line between reality and fiction. À la Recherche de Monsieur Tan depicts the search for a man who used to live in the artist’s neighbourhood.

>Monsieur Tan came to France in the late 1970s to escape the Khmer Rouge and genocide. In order to be allowed to remain, he made himself out to be ten years younger. He made his living as a mechanic out of an old backstreet garage. In his mid-seventies and still working, he would reflect about life as he was fixing Vespas, sat on a stool he had built himself. He lived his life quietly but with care and sincerity. One day, Monsieur Tan disappeared. The search moves from France and Italy, to Cambodia and Thailand looking for possibilities of a life and closure.

This oil painting depicts another painting inside it. It is that of a woman on a beach on a cloudy day in a brown swimming suit with red lipstick. Outside the paining there is also a floating black dress against a black wall and a light pink carpet. By Sylvia Batycka.
