“Maladaptive daydreaming is a psychological concept to describe an extensive fantasy activity that replaces human interaction and interferes with academic, interpersonal, or vocational functioning.”
Hammer realized they'd developed Maladaptive daydreaming in the last few years and decided to use illustration as a way to explore this. Having realised lots of people are suffering from this but don’t want to share the experience of “living in somewhere else alone”, for fear of being misunderstood or judged, Hammer decided to use their work to raise awareness.
