Joanna is an actress, singer, painter, and print maker. She performed in a number of opera houses before pursuing a career in jazz, and has performed on the West End stage under the name Joanna Strand. Recent appearances include Phantom of the Opera and Masterclass (Theatre Royal, Bath), and she regularly performs jazz cabaret shows at Pizza Express on Dean Street, The Pheasantry in Chelsea, The Crazy Coqs at Brasserie Zédel, and in New York at 54 Below and Birdland.
Jo splits her time between singing and making art, and her performances inform her painting and etching. She enjoys the idea of making images performative, alongside the idea of how these images perform independent of their author.

"I hope my audience will enjoy both the relationships celebrated in my work and the experience of the individuals I’ve depicted in print. I also love the deliberate and accidental marks made by drawing on zinc and etching in acid. I now deliberately seek out [the] effects of accidents in my work. I use white ground which breaks down in acid, and also paint stop-out varnish onto wet zinc to encourage it to split while etching; this allows for beautiful textures and stippled marks to reveal themselves.”
